Sarah Winifred Searle Signing, 18 May 2019

The Million Year Picnic is excited to announce that Sarah Winifred Searle will be signing at the shop on Saturday, 5/18, from 12-2pm!

Sarah’s new book is the young adult graphic novel SINCERELY, HARRIET! The reviews are in & it’s great! The Publisher’s Weekly review; the Kirkus review; the AV Club review. SINCERELY, HARRIET (changed from working title Thimble) is a quiet middle grade graphic novel about the power of storytelling and was released by Lerner Publishing’s Graphic Universe imprint on May 7th, 2019.

Harriet Flores, a thirteen-year-old only child, finds herself alone, bored, and stuck at her family’s new apartment after a move from rural Indiana to Chicago. While learning how to manage the change of scenery, a one-sided pen-pal situation, and a health issue she’s trying not to think about, Harriet uses her imagination to deal—for better and for worse. She creates a more vivid world inside the apartment by deciding that the place is haunted, the mailman is up to something, and her elderly landlady has stored a dark secret on the unoccupied top floor. Only after Harriet forms a bond with the landlady, a retired librarian named Pearl, does she begin to truly understand the power of storytelling. But maybe she wasn’t wrong about something being trapped upstairs…

SINCERELY, HARRIET follows Harriet across a restless late summer in 1996, exploring her first crush (which just happens to be on a girl), chronic illness, and different ways to be a storyteller.

Originally hailing from spooky New England and currently based in sunny Oz, Sarah has been overenthusiastic about storytelling in a professional capacity since 2006. She works as a writer, cartoonist, illustrator, editor, graphic designer, and general creative conduit. While she lives in Perth, Western Australia, she is currently planning travel through parts of Europe and North America in May and June of 2019.

Sarah’s work has been published by Graphic Universe, Dark Horse, IDW, BOOM! Studios, Riverhead Books, Fulcrum Publishing, Iron Circus Comics, and Oni Press. Other clients include Harvard University, the Boston Public Library, the Onion/A.V. Club, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, and the Game Show Network.

ADVENTURES OF ALEXANDER VON HUMBOLDT HC

(W) Andrea Wulf (A) Lillian Melcher*

Alexander von Humboldt (1769-1859) was an intrepid explorer and the most famous scientist of his age. His restless life was packed with adventure and discovery, but his most revolutionary idea was a radical vision of nature as a complex and interconnected global force that does not exist for the use of humankind alone. His theories and ideas were profoundly influenced by a five-year exploration of South America. This graphic novel brings his daring expedition to life, complete with excerpts from Humboldt’s own diaries, atlases, and publications, offering a portrait of the man who predicted human-induced climate change and fashioned poetic narrative out of scientific observation.

Entertaining Comics Group (EC Comics) is perhaps best-known today for lurid horror comics like Tales from the Crypt, but during its 1950s heyday, EC was also an early innovator in another genre of comics: the so-called “preachies,” socially conscious stories that boldly challenged the conservatism and conformity of Eisenhower-era America. EC Comics examines a selection of these works – sensationally-titled comics such as “Hate!,” “The Guilty!,” and “Judgment Day!” – and explores how they grappled with the civil rights struggle, antisemitism, and other forms of prejudice in America.

She gives us an intimate portrait of the man who predicted human-induced climate change, fashioned poetic narrative out of scientific observation, and influenced iconic figures such as Simón Bolívar, Thomas Jefferson, Charles Darwin, and John Muir. This gorgeous account of the expedition not only shows how Humboldt honed his groundbreaking understanding of the natural world but also illuminates the man and his passions.
